Daily
- Sweep, vacuum or use a dry microfibre mop to pick up sand and grit — this is the single biggest thing that keeps the shine.
Two to three times a week
- Mop with plain warm water, or a few drops of pH-neutral floor cleaner in a full bucket.
- Wring the mop until it is only damp.
- Change the water when it turns grey.
- For a streak-free finish, go over with a dry microfibre mop.
Avoid
- Bleach, acid-based or "heavy-duty" descaling cleaners
- Abrasive powders, scouring pads and steel wool
- Wax or "shine" products — they build up and go cloudy on homogeneous tiles
- Steam mops used every day on marble gum joints
Protect the shine
- Mats inside and outside the main door
- Felt pads under furniture legs
- Wipe spills straight away, especially near the kitchen and dining table
- Keep the floor dry — polished floors are slippery when wet
When to re-polish
In most homes the gloss lasts for years. Busy walkways may start to look slightly matte after around 3 to 5 years; a refresh polish brings them back without redoing marble gum joints.
