Is a marble gum floor slippery?
When dry, a polished marble gum floor feels much like any high-gloss tile — smooth but comfortable to walk on in bare feet or house slippers. When wet, it is slippery, as all polished tile and stone floors are. This is the honest trade-off for the mirror finish.
How to reduce slip risk
- Keep the floor dry; wipe spills straight away
- Place absorbent mats at the main door, kitchen sink and outside bathroom doors
- Mop with a well-wrung mop so the floor dries quickly
- Take extra care if you have young children or elderly family members — use mats in the areas they walk most
- We do not apply marble gum in bathrooms, balconies exposed to rain or other wet areas
How long does marble gum last?
There are two parts to think about:
- The marble gum in the joints is a hard, cured resin. It does not crumble or stain like cement grout and does not normally need redoing.
- The gloss on the surface wears gradually with foot traffic, like any polished floor. In most homes it looks great for years; busy walkways may benefit from a refresh polish after around 3 to 5 years.
The care routine makes the biggest difference. See how to clean polished homogeneous tiles.
Will it crack?
Marble gum follows the tiles underneath. If a tile is already hollow or cracked, the joint around it can show the movement too. We check for hollow tiles before starting and point out any concerns.
